A Step Toward Fairness: What the New USDA Regulation Means for Farmers and Producers

As farmers and ranchers, we know fairness and transparency are the foundation of a strong and sustainable agricultural industry. That’s why we’re excited to share some big news about the USDA’s latest regulation under the Packers and Stockyards Act. This new rule is a meaningful step toward addressing challenges that many farmers have faced for years, especially when it comes to contracts in the beef industry.

WHAT THE NEW REGULATION COVERS

The regulation is designed to promote fairness and accountability. Here are the highlights:

  • Transparency in Payment Rates: Beef producers will finally have more insight into how payment rates are determined. This added clarity gives you the tools to plan ahead and negotiate with confidence.

  • Fairness in Contract Systems: The “tournament system” and other contract practices are being restructured to ensure more stability and equity for growers.

  • Clear Guidelines for Capital Improvements: You’ll now have clearer requirements for any capital investments, helping you avoid surprises and better plan for the future.

  • Stronger Accountability Measures: Companies will be held to stricter standards, ensuring they follow the rules and treat farmers fairly.

These updates are little changes that can make a real difference in how farmers run their operations.

WHAT THIS IMPACTS

If you’re a cattle producer or a contract grower, this regulation directly affects you. By increasing transparency and accountability, it shifts some of the power back to you, where it belongs. These changes can help you feel more secure in your business relationships and better equipped to make decisions that benefit your operation.

HOW EMPIRE AG CAN HELP

We know navigating new regulations can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. We’re here to help you understand how this change impacts your contracts and your operation as a whole. Whether you’re planning for capital improvements or just need someone to explain the fine print, we’re ready to lend a hand.

We believe success in agriculture comes from making informed, calculated decisions, and this regulation gives you more of the tools you need to do just that.

Jonathon Haralson

Jonathon Haralson, a sixth generation farmer by heritage, and he started farming his own operation from scratch in 2009.

Growing up, Jonathon’s family raised cattle, wheat, hay, and grew pecans. He grew up, alongside his brother, watching his Grandfather and Dad work from sun-up to sun-down on the family farm and grow yard. As time passed by, the market volatility became greater and the banking stress became greater, and Jonathon witnessed the fall of his family’s farming operation when he was just a child. He saw his dreams of continuing to build his family’s farming empire disappear as he watched his family’s equity and land auctioned off piece by piece. It’s something Jonathon never wanted to see happen to another family.

By the grace of God, Jonathon now educates farmers and ranchers about commodities, so they can spend more time out in the field and with their families.
