Mid-Year Check-In: What Smart Producers Are Watching This Summer

We’re halfway through the year. Planting season is mostly wrapped up, cattle are on grass, and the dust (literally) is starting to settle. It’s a natural time for producers to take a step back and ask: Where are we? And where are we headed?

We believe mid-year isn’t just a calendar checkpoint; it’s one of the most important moments to reset, refocus, and make sure you’re positioned to finish the year strong. Here’s what we’re watching closely this summer and what we recommend you do the same.

1. Market Signals That Actually Matter

Prices are moving, and volatility is still part of the story. Whether you’re looking at grain, feeder cattle, or diesel, the truth is: these markets aren’t operating on last year’s logic. Now is the time to run updated breakevens and make sure your marketing plans reflect today’s numbers, not last season’s.

2. Policy & Program Shifts on the Horizon

There’s a lot in the works out of D.C. right now. Between proposed changes to disaster aid for 2023-2024 losses, potential updates to the Farm Bill, and recalculations in crop insurance programs, this is the season to stay informed. One wrong assumption could cost you.

3. Reassess Cash Flow and Capital Needs

We’ve seen time and again that waiting until fall to look at cash flow is too late. Look at your operating capital now. Is it where it needs to be? Do you have enough set aside for fall inputs or opportunities that might come up?

4. Gut Check on Goals

What did you set out to do this year? Mid-year is the right time to check your progress and adjust your plan, whether that’s expanding acres, improving herd genetics, or keeping better financial records. If your goals have shifted, your management decisions should too.

5. Use the Tools That Work

This isn’t about having the fanciest dashboard. It’s about using tools that give you real-time numbers and help you make smart calls. Producers who are tracking profitability by crop or by pasture right now have a serious edge going into harvest or weaning season.

Let’s Make the Second Half Count

We’re walking alongside producers who want to lead with clarity. If you need help digging into your numbers, thinking through a capital plan, or just making sure you’re on the right track, we’re here.

Mid-year isn’t a time to coast. It’s a chance to take control.

Let’s get to work.

Jonathon Haralson

Jonathon Haralson, a sixth generation farmer by heritage, and he started farming his own operation from scratch in 2009.

Growing up, Jonathon’s family raised cattle, wheat, hay, and grew pecans. He grew up, alongside his brother, watching his Grandfather and Dad work from sun-up to sun-down on the family farm and grow yard. As time passed by, the market volatility became greater and the banking stress became greater, and Jonathon witnessed the fall of his family’s farming operation when he was just a child. He saw his dreams of continuing to build his family’s farming empire disappear as he watched his family’s equity and land auctioned off piece by piece. It’s something Jonathon never wanted to see happen to another family.

By the grace of God, Jonathon now educates farmers and ranchers about commodities, so they can spend more time out in the field and with their families.
